Volkswagen has officially confirmed that it will introduce an all-new sub-four-metre compact SUV in India in 2027. The announcement confirms the brand’s return to the segment after the discontinuation of the Polo and Ameo, although Volkswagen has not yet revealed the production model or its name.

The upcoming SUV will be based on the MQB-A0-IN platform and will be locally manufactured in India. Volkswagen says the model is being developed with a high degree of localisation and will be positioned as its most accessible SUV in the country.

Volkswagen’s New Compact SUV: What We Know

The upcoming model is expected to compete in one of India’s largest passenger vehicle segments, where sub-four-metre SUVs account for a significant share of sales.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the SUV will be developed specifically for India, with engineering inputs from teams in India and Europe. The MQB-A0-IN architecture already underpins the Skoda Kylaq, Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus, among other models.

The platform was developed for the Indian market with a focus on localisation, production efficiency and compatibility with modern safety and emission requirements.

While Volkswagen has not disclosed the relationship between the new SUV and the Kylaq, the two models will share their underlying architecture. The Volkswagen is expected to receive its own exterior and interior design, along with equipment and positioning tailored to the brand.

Expected Engine And Gearbox Options

Volkswagen has not announced the powertrain specifications for the new SUV. However, reports suggest that it could use the 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine already used in the Kylaq.

In the Skoda, this engine produces 115 HP and 178 Nm and is available with manual and automatic transmission options. The Volkswagen SUV is expected to offer a similar combination, although the company has not confirmed these details.

The 8-speed automatic transmission could be introduced with the Volkswagen model. This would represent a change from the 6-speed automatic currently offered with the Kylaq. Skoda is also reportedly evaluating the newer transmission for a future update but neither manufacturer has officially confirmed this development.

Local Manufacturing

Volkswagen has confirmed that the new SUV will be manufactured locally, reinforcing its existing investment in India’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem.

The company says the new model is expected to strengthen its local supplier network and contribute to India’s role as a development and manufacturing base for the Volkswagen Group.

Production is expected to take place within the existing local manufacturing ecosystem, although Volkswagen has not yet disclosed detailed production volumes or the exact manufacturing timeline.

Volkswagen Returns To Sub-Four-Metre SUV Segment

The new SUV will give Volkswagen an entry point into a segment it has not directly competed in since the Polo and Ameo were discontinued.

The category includes models such as the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, among others. Competition is therefore expected to be strong when Volkswagen’s new model arrives.

The compact SUV will also sit below the Taigun in Volkswagen’s India portfolio, potentially giving the brand a broader range of SUVs and a lower entry point for customers considering the brand.

Expected Positioning

Volkswagen says the new SUV will focus on its established priorities, including safety, driving characteristics and build quality. The company has also highlighted the use of the MQB-A0-IN platform to enable localisation and the integration of modern safety and technology features.

However, details such as the SUV’s final design, dimensions, equipment list, powertrain, pricing and exact positioning remain undisclosed.

The 2027 launch will therefore be significant for Volkswagen as it attempts to gain a foothold in a high-volume segment. More information about the model is expected to emerge closer to its market introduction.
