VinFast To Develop India-Specific EVs, Plant Expansion Approved

VinFast is preparing to develop electric vehicles specifically for the Indian market as the Vietnamese automaker looks to deepen its manufacturing and sourcing footprint in the country.

The company has also received investment approval for the second phase of its manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. VinFast has not yet revealed the investment planned for the expansion, the additional production capacity it will create or when the next phase of the facility is expected to become operational.

The development marks another step in the company’s longer-term strategy for India, where it is seeking to move beyond assembling vehicles brought in from its global portfolio.

Upcoming VinFast EVs to be developed for India

VinFast says its future Indian models will be developed with local requirements in mind rather than being existing international products modified for the domestic market.

The company has conducted market research and customer clinics to understand preferences among Indian buyers. Feedback from these programmes has already resulted in changes to the VF6 and VF7 for their Indian-market specifications.

For future products, VinFast says it intends to design, develop and manufacture vehicles specifically for India. The company is also targeting significantly greater localisation than its current models.

However, details about the upcoming India-specific EVs remain limited. The automaker has not disclosed the number of models under development, their segments, launch timelines or technical specifications.

VF6 and VF7 production to continue

VinFast currently assembles the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs in India using completely knocked down (CKD) kits at its Thoothukudi plant.

The company has clarified that production plans for the two models remain unchanged. Both SUVs will continue to be assembled locally using CKD kits, following reports that had raised questions about their manufacturing plans in India.

The continuation of CKD assembly means VinFast’s current products and its next generation of India-focused models will follow different approaches. While the existing VF6 and VF7 rely on imported kits, future vehicles are expected to feature higher levels of locally sourced content.

Focus on Indian supplier network

Increasing local sourcing is another part of VinFast’s strategy. The company has organised supplier events in both India and Vietnam, bringing together more than 300 Indian suppliers to identify opportunities for sourcing components locally.

Greater dependence on domestic suppliers could help VinFast increase localisation while building a supply chain better suited to its planned expansion in India.

The company has described the development of a local and resilient component ecosystem as an important part of its manufacturing strategy. It is also in discussions with government agencies regarding policies that could support additional EV manufacturing and investment in the country.

Phase 2 expansion approved

The approval for Phase 2 of the Thoothukudi facility provides VinFast with the opportunity to increase its manufacturing presence in India, although the company has not provided details on the scale of the expansion.

The first phase of the plant currently supports local assembly of VinFast’s electric SUVs. The eventual capacity and investment associated with Phase 2 will determine how significantly the facility can support future India-specific models.

VinFast says India remains an important part of its global manufacturing and business plans. The company also claims that its initial products have helped it remain among the five largest electric passenger vehicle brands in the Indian market.

The next phase of its India strategy will therefore depend on how quickly VinFast can increase localisation, expand its supplier base and introduce products designed specifically for Indian customers.
