Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Launch Set For 17th October

Renault is set to introduce the strong hybrid version of the Duster in India on October 17. The new powertrain will join the SUV’s existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine options, expanding its lineup with a petrol-electric hybrid system.

The upcoming Duster hybrid will use Renault’s E-Tech technology, which combines a petrol engine with two electric motors and a battery pack. The company says the system draws on its experience in Formula 1.

With the addition of the hybrid powertrain, the Duster will enter a segment that already includes strong hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

Renault Duster Hybrid Powertrain Details

The Renault Duster strong hybrid will feature a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 1789cc. The engine works alongside two electric motors, one producing 20 HP and functioning as a generator, while the other delivers 49hp and drives the wheels.

The hybrid system has a combined output of 160 HP and 172 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 1.4kWh battery pack and a multi-mode automatic transmission.

Unlike the hybrid systems used in the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris, Renault’s E-Tech setup uses a transmission with fixed gear ratios. The system can switch between electric drive, petrol-engine power and a combination of both, depending on driving conditions.

Toyota’s strong hybrid system, by comparison, uses an e-CVT with a power-split mechanism. The difference in transmission design means the Duster hybrid may offer a more conventional automatic driving experience, with noticeable changes in engine speed and gear engagement.

Renault Duster Hybrid: Expected Fuel Efficiency

The Duster’s strong hybrid system is designed to improve efficiency by allowing electric-only driving at lower speeds, recovering energy through regenerative braking and switching off the petrol engine when conditions permit.

Renault claims that up to 80 percent of city driving can be completed in electric mode. However, this figure is a manufacturer claim, and actual fuel efficiency will depend on factors such as traffic conditions, driving style, ambient temperature and road speed.

The 1.4kWh battery is larger than the 0.60kWh battery used in the Toyota Hyryder’s strong hybrid system. However, battery capacity alone does not determine overall fuel efficiency, as the performance of the engine, electric motors and energy management system also plays a role.

Renault has not provided real-world fuel economy figures for the Indian-spec Duster hybrid in the supplied information.

Renault Duster Hybrid: Rivals and Market Positioning

The introduction of the strong hybrid powertrain will expand the Duster’s appeal to buyers looking for an alternative to conventional petrol-powered midsize SUVs.

The SUV will compete with the strong hybrid variants of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. These models already offer petrol-electric powertrains in the midsize SUV segment.

The hybrid option could also address the absence of a diesel engine in the new Duster lineup by offering an alternative focused on fuel efficiency, particularly in urban driving conditions.

Pricing, fuel efficiency figures and other India-specific details will be important factors in determining how the hybrid variant is positioned against its rivals.
