Audi A2 e-tron Debuts With 646 Km Range, Up To 322 HP

Audi has introduced the A2 e-tron, its smallest electric model to date, with a claimed maximum WLTP range of 646 km. The new hatchback revives the A2 nameplate that was previously used for a compact combustion-engined model sold between 1999 and 2005.

The A2 e-tron is based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which also underpins electric models such as the Volkswagen ID 3, Skoda Elroq and Audi Q4 e-tron. Audi has focused on efficiency with the new EV, which is designed primarily for the European market.

Audi A2 e-tron: Battery and motor specifications

The A2 e-tron will be offered with three battery capacities — 52kWh, 61kWh and 84kWh — and four motor configurations. The smaller 52kWh and 61kWh packs use LFP chemistry, while the 84kWh battery uses NMC cells.

The entry version produces 168 HP and 350 Nm, with a claimed 0-100 km/hr time of 8.8 seconds and a WLTP range of 423 km. The 61kWh version develops 188 HP and 350 Nm, takes 7.9 seconds to reach 100 km/hr and has a claimed range of 515 km.

With the 84kWh battery, the A2 e-tron is available with either a 228 HP or 322 HP motor. The former produces 350 Nm and offers the highest claimed range of 646 km, while the latter generates 545 Nm and reduces the 0-100 km/hr time to 5.7 seconds. The 228 HP version has a claimed top speed of 160 km/hr, while the 322 HP model can reach 200 km/hr. All four versions use rear-wheel drive.

Audi says the A2 e-tron can achieve energy consumption as low as 12.8kWh/100km in a 140kW version equipped with the optional efficiency package, making it the most efficient model in the brand’s history according to its claimed figures.

Charging capability varies with the battery. The 52kWh pack supports up to 100kW DC charging and takes a claimed 24 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent. The 61kWh battery supports up to 105kW and requires 26 minutes for the same charging window. The 84kWh pack can accept up to 183kW and takes 29 minutes.

Audi A2 e-tron: Exterior design

The new A2 e-tron uses a rounded, compact body shape that echoes the proportions of the original A2 while incorporating Audi’s current EV design language. Aerodynamic efficiency has been a key consideration, with the car claiming a drag coefficient of 0.24.

The front end is largely closed off, with the ADAS sensors and primary headlamps integrated into the fascia. Slim daytime running lights sit above the main lighting elements. Audi has also worked on the underbody, which is largely enclosed to reduce aerodynamic disturbance.

The car features aero-optimised wheels and specially shaped wheel-arch elements designed to reduce airflow disruption around the tyres. Wing-shaped door handles are another aerodynamic detail. At the rear, the roof tapers towards a spoiler, while horizontal tail-lamps sit on either side of the Audi logo.

Audi A2 e-tron: Interior and features

The cabin follows a simpler layout than some of Audi’s larger models. Recycled fabric is used extensively, while several conventional physical controls have been replaced by touch-sensitive interfaces.

The steering wheel combines physical rollers with touch-sensitive controls, and the door handles use haptic sensors. A separate panel positioned behind the steering wheel houses functions such as the electric parking brake.

The A2 e-tron gets an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and a centrally mounted 12.8-inch touchscreen. A seven-speaker audio system is standard, while buyers can opt for a 14-speaker Sonos system. An optional head-up display is also available, providing information such as speed, navigation directions and audio details.

The model also adopts Audi’s newer steering-column stalk arrangement, first introduced on the Q3.

Audi A2 e-tron: Price and production

The A2 e-tron will be manufactured at Audi’s Ingolstadt facility in Germany. Audi says the model has been developed with European customers in mind.

Prices for the new electric hatchback start at 38,200 euros, which was equivalent to around Rs. 41.92 lakh at the time of writing. Audi has not indicated whether the A2 e-tron will be introduced in India.
