2027 BMW 3-Series Revealed With Electric i3, M350 xDrive

BMW has introduced the next generation 3 Series, expanding the nameplate with a broader mix of powertrains while adopting the brand’s latest Neue Klasse design and technology. The range marks a significant shift for the long-running sedan, with the fully electric BMW i3 joining petrol-powered versions featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology. A plug-in hybrid variant is also planned for a later stage.

New BMW 3 Series gets Neue Klasse-inspired design

The new 3 Series adopts BMW’s latest design language while retaining the proportions associated with the sedan. It features a longer wheelbase, short overhangs, a set-back glasshouse and more pronounced wheel arches. Flush-fitting door handles and a prominent character line running along the sides further distinguish the new model.

At the front, BMW has reworked its traditional kidney grille and twin-headlamp arrangement into a single visual unit. M Performance versions receive distinctive M Yellow Lights, while the rear gets a predominantly horizontal lighting signature and a wider-looking stance.

Wheel sizes will vary according to the version. The electric i3 can be equipped with 19- to 21-inch wheels, while combustion-engine models get 18- to 20-inch options. M Sport and M Sport Pro packages will also be available.

Cabin focuses on digital technology and driver orientation

Inside, the 3 Series adopts the minimalist approach seen across BMW’s Neue Klasse models. The highlight is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which combines the BMW Panoramic Vision display, an optional 3D Head-Up Display, a centrally mounted touchscreen and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.

The central display measures 17.9 inches and is angled towards the driver. BMW says the new interface is designed around touch, physical controls and voice interaction, with the Intelligent Personal Assistant also incorporating Amazon Alexa+ technology.

The cabin can be configured with four interior design themes, while features such as electrically adjustable seats with memory, optional multifunction and M Sport seats, rear-seat heating and Harman Kardon audio are available.

BMW i3 brings electric power to the 3 Series

For the first time, the 3 Series range includes a fully electric sedan based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. The BMW i3 uses the company’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, featuring cylindrical-cell batteries, new electric motors, an 800V electrical architecture and bidirectional charging capability.

At launch, the i3 will be offered in two variants. The BMW i3 50 xDrive produces 345 kW (469 HP) and 645 Nm, with a claimed 0-100 km/hr time of 4.7 seconds. Its 108.7 kWh battery provides a claimed WLTP range of up to 912 km, while DC charging at up to 400 kW can add up to 423 km of range in 10 minutes under BMW’s stated conditions.

The BMW i3 40 xDrive develops 275 kW (374 HP) and uses an 82.8 kWh battery. BMW quotes a maximum WLTP range of 710 km for this version. An even more powerful i3 M60 xDrive M Performance model is scheduled to join the range in 2027.

M350 xDrive remains the performance flagship

Despite the arrival of the electric i3, BMW is continuing with a six-cylinder petrol-powered performance variant. The new M350 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

It develops 326 kW (443 HP) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 4.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. BMW also introduces a Drift Moment feature, which allows the driver to direct engine power to the rear wheels for controlled oversteer.

Two four-cylinder petrol variants will also join the combustion-engine range at launch, with all petrol engines using BMW’s latest TwinPower Turbo technology.

More driver assistance and connected features

The new 3 Series also gets an expanded suite of driver-assistance systems. BMW says the range will offer SAE Level 2 assistance functions, enhanced active safety technology and its Symbiotic Drive system.

The Motorway Assistant can enable hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h in 21 countries, while additional navigation-guided assistance functions for urban environments are planned from 2027.

Production split between Munich and Dingolfing

Production of the electric BMW i3 will take place at BMW Group Plant Munich, the historic home of the 3 Series. BMW plans to transition the Munich facility entirely to production of Neue Klasse electric models in 2027.

Combustion-engine versions of the new 3 Series will be produced at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Bavaria, while key electric-drive and engine components will come from BMW facilities in Austria and Germany.

The new BMW 3 Series therefore represents a broader transition for the nameplate, combining electric, mild-hybrid and future plug-in hybrid powertrains within the same family while moving the sedan towards BMW’s latest digital and electronic architecture.
