Tata Motors is working on a new midsize electric SUV, internally referred to as ‘Kuno’, which is expected to compete with the MG Windsor EV. The upcoming model is likely to arrive in 2027-28 and will sit above the Nexon EV in the company’s electric vehicle portfolio.
Measuring approximately 4.3 metres in length, the new electric SUV is expected to be positioned between the next-generation Nexon EV, currently being developed under the codename Garud, and the Sierra EV. The Kuno will further expand Tata’s presence in the midsize electric SUV segment, where it already has the Curvv EV and Sierra EV.
The project is part of Tata Motors’ broader electrification roadmap, which aims to increase its EV portfolio from six to 10 models by FY2031. The company had outlined this expansion strategy during its Investor Day in June 2026.
Tata Kuno EV: Platform and expected production
The upcoming electric SUV is expected to use Tata’s Acti.ev dedicated electric vehicle architecture. The platform has been developed to accommodate different vehicle configurations, including front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).
Its dedicated EV architecture features a flat floor and an optimised battery layout, which could help Tata maximise cabin space. This will be particularly important given the MG Windsor EV’s focus on interior room and passenger comfort.
The Kuno is likely to be manufactured at Tata Motors’ Sanand facility in Gujarat. The company is reportedly considering an annual production capacity of around 80,000 to 1 lakh units for the model. However, the final production plans and manufacturing timeline are yet to be officially confirmed.
It is worth noting that Kuno is an internal project codename and is unlikely to be the final name of the production model.
Battery, powertrain and expected range
Tata Motors has not disclosed the battery specifications, electric motor configuration or driving range of the upcoming SUV. However, considering its positioning in the company’s portfolio, the Kuno could potentially share battery and motor technology with the existing Curvv EV or Sierra EV.
For reference, the Curvv EV is available with a 55kWh battery pack paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing 167 HP and 215 Nm. It has a claimed driving range of 502 km.
The Sierra EV offers larger battery options of 65kWh and 75kWh, with claimed ranges of up to 535 km and 665 km, respectively. Its rear-wheel-drive versions produce 238 HP and 209 HP, depending on the configuration, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant develops a combined 349 HP and 504 Nm.
Whether Tata will carry over these battery and motor options to the Kuno or introduce a different setup remains unknown.
Tata Kuno EV: Expected price and positioning
Pricing details of the upcoming electric SUV have not been revealed. However, its positioning suggests that it could occupy a similar price bracket to the Curvv EV and Sierra EV.
For reference, the Curvv EV is currently priced between Rs. 17.19 lakhs and Rs. 19.39 lakhs, while the Sierra EV range is priced between Rs. 18.79 lakhs and Rs. 25.99 lakhs (ex-showroom).
The MG Windsor EV will be among its key competitors, with cabin space, battery capacity, driving range and overall pricing likely to play an important role in determining how the two models compare.
With a planned arrival in 2027-28, the Kuno will be an important addition to Tata Motors’ expanding electric vehicle portfolio. More details regarding its design, specifications, battery options and pricing are expected to emerge closer to its launch.
