Toyota is working on an all-new 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain for its upcoming generation of vehicles, with the company targeting a fuel efficiency improvement of more than 15 percent over its existing hybrid systems. The new setup will combine a four-cylinder petrol engine with updated electric motors and power electronics.

The upcoming powertrain will be offered in naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations. According to Toyota, the naturally aspirated version is being engineered to deliver performance comparable to its existing 1.8-litre engine and 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit.

New engine and hybrid system developed together

Unlike conventional approaches that involve adapting existing petrol engines for hybrid applications, Toyota has developed the new combustion engine, electric motor system and power electronics as an integrated package.

The development approach is aimed at improving efficiency across the entire powertrain. Toyota expects reductions in mechanical friction, better thermal management and improvements in electrical efficiency to contribute to the targeted fuel economy gains.

The company is also focusing on reducing the overall dimensions of the hybrid system. A more compact arrangement could create additional flexibility in vehicle design and packaging.

Common platform to support multiple powertrains

The smaller hybrid system is expected to play an important role in Toyota’s future vehicle architecture. The company intends to accommodate conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric powertrains within a common platform originally developed with electric vehicles in mind.

This approach could allow manufacturers to develop vehicles with different powertrain options without requiring entirely separate architectures. The compact packaging may also enable lower bonnet heights, improved cabin space utilisation and greater freedom in exterior styling.

Another potential advantage is reduced development and manufacturing expenditure. By sharing the underlying architecture and investments across multiple powertrain technologies, Toyota could improve production flexibility and adjust manufacturing volumes according to demand in different markets.

The automaker’s multi-pathway strategy continues to place emphasis on offering different electrification technologies rather than relying exclusively on battery electric vehicles. The new 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain is expected to form an important part of this approach, although further details regarding its production timeline and the first models to receive it are yet to be announced.
