Hyundai Bayon

Hyundai has launched the Bayon in India at an introductory price of Rs. 10 lakhs (ex-showroom), positioning it below the Creta in the mid-size SUV segment. Deliveries have commenced, with the new SUV being manufactured at Hyundai’s Chennai facility in both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive configurations for domestic sales and exports.

The Bayon brings a new design, a technology-focused cabin and a naturally aspirated petrol engine. Hyundai has also confirmed that a CNG version will join the lineup in January 2027.

Hyundai Bayon: Exterior Design And Dimensions

The Bayon measures 424 5mm in length, 1810 mm in width and 1605 mm in height, including roof rails. It has a wheelbase of 2600 mm, ground clearance of 205 mm and a boot capacity of 505 litres.

The SUV is based on Hyundai’s Global K enhanced platform, which the company says has been engineered to meet five-star Indian crash-test safety standards. Bharat NCAP crash-test results are expected by the end of 2026.

Its exterior follows Hyundai’s Art of Steel design language. At the front, the Bayon features LED projector headlights and L-shaped daytime running lights that also function as turn indicators. Unlike several newer Hyundai models, it does not use a full-width light bar.

The side profile features pronounced wheel arches, black body cladding, sharp character lines and 17-inch alloy wheels. Traditional pull-type door handles are used instead of flush-fitting units.

At the rear, the SUV gets slim LED tail-lamps connected visually by a black panel, Bayon lettering on the tailgate and a roof spoiler with an integrated stop lamp. The rear bumper features a dual-tone black-and-silver finish.

Hyundai Bayon Interior And Features

The cabin features two 12.3-inch displays, one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system. Physical buttons and rotary controls are retained for several functions, while the climate controls sit below the central touchscreen.

The steering wheel incorporates controls for various functions, along with a separate drive-mode selector. Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal and Sport.

Other equipment includes ventilated front seats, powered adjustment for the driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof, a Bose sound system, ambient lighting and a wireless phone charger. The SUV also gets Type-C USB ports, rear air-conditioning vents and two-stage reclining rear seats.

Hyundai has equipped the Bayon with its Bluelink connected-car technology, over-the-air updates and a generative AI voice assistant. The latter is designed to understand conversational requests rather than relying exclusively on predefined voice commands.

Safety and driver assistance features include Level 2 ADAS, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, four-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a tyre-pressure monitoring system and an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold.

Hyundai Bayon Engine And Gearbox Options

The Bayon is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 115 HP and 144 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Hyundai claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 18.6 km/l for the petrol-CVT version. The SUV also gets a Dash Boost mode, which the company says provides an immediate increase in power when overtaking.

Unlike the Creta, which offers additional turbo-petrol and diesel powertrain options, the Bayon is currently available only with the naturally aspirated petrol engine.

A CNG variant is scheduled to arrive in January 2027. This would make the Bayon Hyundai’s first CNG-powered mid-size SUV in India, adding an alternative for buyers prioritising running costs.

Hyundai Bayon: Rivals In India

The Bayon will compete in a crowded SUV segment that includes the Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and MG Astor. It will also sit alongside the Creta within Hyundai’s own portfolio.

The introduction of the Bayon gives Hyundai an additional option for customers seeking a mid-size SUV with modern technology and a naturally aspirated petrol engine. Its equipment list includes several features generally associated with higher variants in the segment, although the availability of individual features will depend on the variant.

The upcoming CNG version could help Hyundai appeal to customers looking for lower running costs. Pricing across the full variant range, along with the Bayon’s performance in independent crash testing, will be important considerations for buyers evaluating the new SUV.
