Toyota is set to unveil its updated Fortuner globally on December 1, 2026, with an India launch expected in 2027. The debut date has been reported by Car Mag, citing Toyota South Africa. The upcoming SUV is expected to receive significant exterior and interior revisions, although it could continue using the existing ladder-frame platform and retain much of its underlying structure.
The Fortuner has been spotted testing in Thailand, with recent spy images offering glimpses of its revised design. While the model has been described as a new-generation SUV in some reports, other reports suggest it could be a substantial redesign of the current model rather than an entirely new-generation vehicle.
Toyota Fortuner To Retain Existing Platform
The upcoming Fortuner is expected to continue using Toyota’s IMV ladder-frame architecture. The basic bodyshell is also reportedly expected to remain, although several exterior panels could be revised to give the SUV a fresher appearance.
This approach would allow Toyota to update the Fortuner’s design and equipment without introducing an entirely new platform. However, the final extent of the structural and mechanical changes will become clearer closer to its global unveiling.
Updated Exterior Design Expected
Spy shots indicate that the new Fortuner will feature a revised front fascia, including a prominent grille, a tall bonnet and updated lighting elements. The SUV is also expected to retain its upright stance, pronounced wheel arches and side steps.
At the rear, test vehicles suggest changes to the tailgate and tail-lamp design, potentially including a connected LED light strip. Heavy camouflage on the prototypes makes it difficult to establish the final design of the bumpers and lighting assemblies.
The overall styling is expected to represent a noticeable departure from the current model while preserving the Fortuner’s familiar SUV proportions.
Cabin Could Get More Technology
The interior is expected to receive a comprehensive update, potentially drawing inspiration from the latest Toyota Hilux. Expected additions include a larger touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster and improved connectivity features.
Toyota could also revise the dashboard layout, materials and controls to modernise the cabin. An expanded Toyota Safety Sense suite is anticipated on at least some variants, potentially bringing features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.
These features remain expected rather than confirmed, and the final equipment list for India could differ from that offered in other markets.
2.8-Litre Diesel Engine Likely To Continue
The familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine is expected to remain available, paired with manual and automatic transmission options. Toyota could also consider offering a 2.7-litre petrol engine, although this has not been confirmed.
Further details about engine output, fuel efficiency, drivetrain configurations and any potential powertrain revisions are awaited.
Toyota Fortuner Sales And Competition In India
The Fortuner continues to attract buyers in India’s premium SUV segment. It recorded sales of 3,185 units in September 2026, representing a 14.44% increase compared with the same month last year. Sales for the July-September quarter stood at 9,878 units, up 15.88% year-on-year.
Competition in the segment includes the Kia Sorento, Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron, although these models differ in size, construction and market positioning.
The upcoming update could help Toyota maintain the Fortuner’s appeal by refreshing its styling and introducing more contemporary cabin technology. However, details such as pricing, variant-wise features and the India-specific powertrain lineup are yet to be announced. More information is expected following the SUV’s global debut in December.
