

Mahindra is evaluating several electrified powertrain options for its SUV range, although the company has not confirmed whether the upcoming Scorpio Lifestyler pickup will receive a hybrid or electric powertrain.
The Scorpio Lifestyler was recently unveiled ahead of its planned April 2027 launch. Depending on the market, the pickup is expected to be offered with Mahindra’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines. Electrification remains a possibility, but the company has not committed to a specific hybrid or EV variant.
Scorpio Lifestyler hybrid plans remain unclear
Speaking to Carsales Australia, Mahindra Head of International Operations Sachin Arolkar indicated that a fully electric powertrain is not currently being pursued for the pickup segment. Asked about the possibility of a hybrid version of the Scorpio Lifestyler, Arolkar suggested that more information would have to wait, without confirming such a model.
This leaves the door open for a hybrid Lifestyler in the future but there is currently no official confirmation that one is under development or when it could arrive.
The decision could be particularly relevant for markets such as Australia, where electrified pickup options are expanding. Models including the BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger PHEV are adding hybrid alternatives to a segment that has traditionally been dominated by diesel-powered vehicles.
However, diesel pickups continue to appeal to buyers who prioritise towing capability, long-distance driving and heavy-duty use. Mahindra could therefore initially focus on conventional powertrains for the Lifestyler, depending on market requirements.
Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid under development
Mahindra’s approach to electrification is more defined in its SUV portfolio. The company is developing a full-hybrid powertrain for the XUV 7XO, giving the model an electrified option alongside its conventional petrol and diesel engines.
A full hybrid could occupy a position between Mahindra’s ICE-powered SUVs and its dedicated electric models. Unlike a mild-hybrid system primarily intended to improve efficiency, a full hybrid can use electric propulsion for certain driving conditions while combining it with an internal-combustion engine when required.
The development comes as hybrid SUVs gain greater prominence in India. Toyota and Maruti Suzuki already have established hybrid offerings, while more manufacturers are introducing electrified SUVs across different price segments.
For Mahindra, the XUV 7XO hybrid would broaden the range of powertrain choices available to customers who may not yet be ready to move to a fully electric vehicle.
XEV 9e could get range-extender powertrain
Mahindra is also understood to be working on a range-extender powertrain for the XEV 9e. This technology differs from a conventional hybrid because the combustion engine is primarily used as a generator to produce electricity, rather than being the main source of mechanical drive to the wheels.
The setup can allow the vehicle to operate primarily using electric propulsion while the engine provides additional energy when the battery requires it. This could help reduce concerns around charging during longer journeys, particularly in areas where fast-charging infrastructure is less widespread.
A range-extender version of the XEV 9e would consequently represent a different electrification strategy from the full hybrid planned for the XUV 7XO. However, Mahindra has yet to provide details about specifications, launch timing or availability of such a powertrain.
Hybrid and PHEV competition grows
The Indian market is seeing a wider variety of electrified SUVs as manufacturers look beyond conventional petrol and diesel powertrains. Full hybrids, plug-in hybrids and pure EVs are increasingly being offered as alternatives, each targeting different requirements.
This expanding market could give Mahindra more scope to introduce multiple electrified technologies rather than relying solely on battery-electric vehicles. A hybrid XUV 7XO could target buyers seeking improved efficiency without depending entirely on charging infrastructure, while a range-extender XEV 9e could retain a predominantly electric driving experience with an additional source of energy for longer trips.
At present, however, the company’s electrification plans appear to be more clearly focused on its SUV portfolio than on the Scorpio Lifestyler.
Mahindra’s electrification strategy
Mahindra is building a broader powertrain portfolio that includes conventional petrol and diesel engines, dedicated EVs and potentially hybrid and range-extender technologies.
The XUV 7XO hybrid and potential XEV 9e range extender would give the automaker additional options as customer preferences and charging infrastructure evolve. Whether similar technology eventually makes its way into ladder-frame products such as the Scorpio Lifestyler will depend on market demand, engineering considerations and Mahindra’s future product strategy.
For now, the Scorpio Lifestyler is expected to launch with conventional powertrains, while Mahindra’s confirmed and emerging electrification efforts are concentrated on its SUV lineup.
