Audi has introduced the new Nuvolari, a limited-production plug-in hybrid supercar positioned as the brand’s flagship performance model. The German manufacturer has clarified that the Nuvolari is not intended to replace the iconic R8 but instead serves as an exclusive halo car showcasing Audi’s latest engineering and performance technologies.

Production will be restricted to 499 units globally, with each example priced at €600,000 (approximately Rs. 6.64 crores).

The Nuvolari shares its underlying plug-in hybrid powertrain with the Lamborghini Temerario. The setup combines a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 800 HP with three electric motors and a 7.3kWh battery pack.

Two electric motors are mounted on the front axle, while a third is integrated into the gearbox. Combined system output stands at 1001 HP, delivered to all four wheels through Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to Audi, the Nuvolari can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 2.6 seconds and from 0-200 km/hr in 6.8 seconds. The company claims a top speed exceeding 350 km/hr.

Audi says the Nuvolari incorporates several technologies influenced by its Formula 1 programme. These include active aerodynamic elements such as adjustable front air intakes and a movable rear wing, along with brake-by-wire hardware and an advanced energy management system designed to optimise performance and efficiency.

The exterior design draws heavily from the Audi Concept C unveiled in 2025. Key styling elements include slim lighting units, sculpted bodywork, a wide rectangular grille and distinctive LED lighting signatures.

At the same time, the Nuvolari incorporates several cues reminiscent of the R8, including prominent side air intakes, muscular rear haunches and a low-slung supercar profile. Additional highlights include centre-lock wheels, a louvred engine cover, a large rear diffuser and a centrally positioned exhaust outlet.

Audi has extensively used carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) throughout the structure to reduce weight while improving rigidity, a factor that contributes to handling and overall performance.

Inside, the Nuvolari adopts a minimalist, performance-oriented layout. Alcantara and leather upholstery dominate the cabin, while anodised aluminium trim pieces add contrast.

The driver is positioned behind a digital instrument display and a multifunction steering wheel equipped with various controls and paddle shifters. A large touchscreen sits on the centre console, which also houses essential vehicle controls.

A raised transmission tunnel divides the cabin into two distinct zones, creating a dual-cockpit effect. Lightweight sports seats come as standard, while several interior design elements pay homage to Audi’s historic Auto Union Type C racing car from the 1930s.

The Nuvolari takes its name from legendary Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari, who was once described by Ferdinand Porsche as “the greatest driver of the past, present, and future.” Audi has previously used the Nuvolari name on a concept coupe unveiled in 2003.
