Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its upcoming mid-size SUV, currently known as the “Escudo,” on September 3. This model will mark a milestone for the company as the first Maruti vehicle in India to feature Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It will also introduce Dolby Atmos technology, a first for the brand in the Indian market.
The Escudo will be positioned as Maruti’s second mid-size SUV after the Grand Vitara but will be retailed through the company’s Arena dealerships, unlike the Nexa-exclusive Grand Vitara. While the name “Escudo” is being used internally, it may be changed closer to the launch.
Competing in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, the Escudo will take on established models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Curvv, Honda Elevate and MG Astor, many of which already offer Level-2 ADAS. Maruti’s move to incorporate this technology reflects its broader focus on safety enhancements, including the standardisation of six airbags and electronic stability control across several of its models.
Sources indicate that the Escudo will share its powertrains with the Grand Vitara and will also offer a four-wheel-drive (4WD) option. Other notable features expected on the SUV include a powered tailgate, which will further enhance convenience and appeal in the segment.
The launch of the Escudo comes at a time when the SUV market continues to dominate the Indian automotive landscape. In FY25, SUVs accounted for over 54% of all passenger vehicle sales, with the mid-size segment alone contributing more than 6 lakh units. The Hyundai Creta leads the segment, followed by Maruti’s own Grand Vitara and the Kia Seltos.
The Escudo will be Maruti’s most technologically advanced product offered via Arena dealerships, which currently sell models like the Brezza, Dzire, Swift and WagonR.
Meanwhile, Maruti’s plans to introduce its first battery electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, have faced delays due to a global shortage of rare earth magnets triggered by China’s export curbs. The e-Vitara, aimed at over 100 global markets including Japan and Europe, will be manufactured at Maruti’s Gujarat facility once production hurdles are resolved.
