
Volkswagen AG’s former managers were convicted for their role in the infamous Dieselgate scandal. This scandal cost the company billions of euros and reputational damage. A German court convicted the managers after a 4-year trial.
The Braunschweig Regional Court gave the former executive, Heinz-Jakob Neusser, a suspended jail term of 1 year and 3 months for his role in the emissions scandal. The scandal involved using software to sidestep the emission rules.
The German court also found another manager, identified as Jens H., who was found manipulating more than 2 million vehicles. The court convicted him and sentenced him to 4.5 years in jail for the offence. Notably, The court gave Hanno J. a term of 2 years 7 months.
The court also gave Thorsten D. a suspended sentence of 1 year and 10 months. It’s worth mentioning that all four managers denied the allegations.
The tribunal handed down its first verdicts in relation to the Dieselgate scandal, nearly a decade after it came to light. In 2019, authorities charged the Volkswagen Group with emission software manipulation. This manipulation impacted 9 million vehicles sold in Europe and the US.
However, during the trial, authorities narrowed down the cars to 4 million vehicles.
