Toyota Patented Design Of The FJ Cruiser, Features Boxy Styling With Rounded Edges

Toyota patented the next-generation FJ Cruiser. Previously, the brand shared a teaser of the rugged SUV’s silhouette. Notably, the smaller proportions of the SUV help you understand that it is a mini-Fortuner.

The patent images confirm that the SUV evolved from the Cruiser EV concept from 2021. A modified version of the IMV ladder frame chassis will be the basis for the new FJ Cruiser.

The FJ name became iconic to the Land Cruiser, with the first one being the FJ20 in 1955. Toyota last used the FJ name on the retro-styled FJ Cruiser, sold from 2006 to 2022. It was discontinued in markets like the USA earlier, but continued to be on sale in the Middle East until 2022.

This chassis is currently used by the Toyota Hilux Champ, which is sold in Thailand and Indonesia. The IMV ladder frame setup is also seen in Hilux, Fortuner and Innova Crysta.

Styling

The patent image also shows that the next-generation FJ Cruiser features a proper 5-door layout. There is an aggressive front and rear bumper as well as thick C-pillars. The future FJ Cruiser features rounded edges in the front, with a tall front bumper and body cladding, giving it the appearance of an off-road-ready SUV. The upright rear also carries a spare wheel, mounted on the tailgate.

The next-generation FJ Cruiser is expected to retain the 2750mm wheelbase, which is identical to the Hilux, Champ and Fortuner.

Expected Engine Options

The FJ Cruiser is expected to feature a 2.0-litre petrol engine from the Hilux Champ and a 2.7-litre petrol engine. We also expect the 2.8-litre Turbo diesel engine, which powers the Fortuner. The top-spec variants are expected to get an all-wheel-drive setup.

Expected Launch Date

Toyota is in the process of launching more SUVs in the Indian market. This is why the launch of the small, rugged SUV should not be out of the realm of possibility. We expect the production version of the FJ Cruiser to debut in late 2025 or early 2026.
