Tesla Model Y debuts in India with two variants, starting at Rs. 59.89 lakh

Tesla has officially entered the Indian electric vehicle market with the launch of the Model Y. Offered in two variants, Standard RWD and Long Range RWD, the Model Y is priced at Rs. 59.89 lakh and Rs. 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. The on-road price for the Standard RWD and Long Range RWD is Rs. 62.25 lakhs and Rs. 70.33 lakhs, respectively.

This launch coincides with the opening of Tesla’s first Indian showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, with bookings now open and initial deliveries planned for Delhi, Gurugram and Mumbai.

The Model Y reaches India as a completely built unit (CBU) and features a range of up to 622 km on the WLTP cycle. The Standard version delivers up to 500 km on a single charge and accelerates from 0-100 km/hr in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range variant achieves the same sprint in 5.6 seconds. International specifications suggest the Standard model includes a 63kWh battery and a 283 HP motor, whereas the Long Range uses an 83kWh battery paired with a 312 HP motor. Both variants claim a top speed of 201 km/hr.

Tesla has also announced plans to establish 16 Supercharger stations across India, with eight initial units being installed around Mumbai and Delhi. Using these, the Long Range variant can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes thanks to a 250kWh charging rate.

In terms of design, the Model Y maintains Tesla’s minimalist aesthetic. It features a clean exterior with a full-width LED light bar, flush door handles and aero wheels. The interior continues this minimalism, led by a large 15.4-inch central touchscreen and a nearly button-less layout. Rear passengers also get an 8-inch touchscreen to control seat and climate settings.

Feature highlights for the India-spec Model Y include powered, heated and ventilated front seats, folding heated rear seats, ambient lighting, a 9-speaker sound system, connected car technologies, eight exterior cameras, a panoramic glass roof and a heated windshield. Tesla’s Autopilot feature is offered as an optional extra for Rs. 6 lakhs.

Warranty coverage includes 4 years or 80,000km for the vehicle and 8 years or 1,92,000 km for the battery and drive unit.

In India, the Tesla Model Y will compete with premium electric SUVs like the Kia EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Volvo EC40, BMW iX1 and Mercedes-Benz EQA. Deliveries of the Standard variant are set to begin within this quarter, with the Long Range version expected to follow from October.
