Renault Duster & Bigster To Launch In India, Evaluation Of CNG, Hybrid Powertrains
Renault is evaluating a multi-fuel strategy that will be seen on the Duster and Bigster models in India. The French company has assured that it will commit to mediums like CNG, ethanol and petrol. There is also an increased focus on range-extended hybrid versions for their model range.
The French manufacturer will not use their efforts to develop mild hybrid tech as it believes it doesn’t make financial sense in India. Renault is studying options for range extension in their hybrid engines, including CNG.The technology for creation of these powertrains is likely to be localised.
Mild & Strong Hybrid Powertrains
These hybrid powertrains are expected to make their way into the Duster and its 7-seater model, Bigster models. The timeline with respect to launching these models remains undisclosed at present. The company expects to launch the internal combustion engine and hybrid powertrain variants concurrently in the same year.
The Renault Duster (known as Dacia Duster in a few markets) is available with mild hybrid and strong hybrid engines. The mild hybrid engine is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with a 48V starter motor is available which is an entry point for potential customers.
A 1.6-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors, powered by a 1.2 kWh battery, produce a combined 140 HP in the strong hybrid option. It pairs with a standard automatic transmission. According to Renault, this setup is good for 80% city driving.
It is still a question mark as to whether Renault will use the same powertrain combination in India. In International markets, the Duster also gets 4×4 and LPG powertrain options, which are reportedly unlikely.
The reason for this is the electric rear axle of the new car, which doesn’t make it cost-effective. However, these options could provide added flexibility that the duster may need. We still need to determine which powertrain options will be available for India and whether Renault can succeed in the market, considering the strong competition from the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Tata Harrier.
