The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has revised registration renewal fees for vehicles older than 20 years. The change aims to reduce air pollution by discouraging the use of outdated, high-emission vehicles. Cars and bikes aged between 15 and 20 years remain unaffected by this increase.
Owners of cars manufactured before 2005 are urged to switch to newer models that meet current emission norms. These older vehicles typically fail BS II standards. The government hopes this measure accelerates the adoption of cleaner alternatives.
Renewing a 20-year-old made-in-India car’s registration now costs Rs 10,000, up from Rs 5000. For two-wheelers, the cost has doubled from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000. Imported cars now cost Rs 80,000 for renewal, while imported bikes require Rs 20,000.
Three-wheelers face an increased renewal fee of Rs 5000 compared to Rs 2500 earlier. Commercial and other vehicles now cost Rs 12,000 instead of Rs 6000. These revised charges take effect immediately under MoRTH’s latest policy update.
