NHAI tightens rules on loose FASTags ahead of major toll system upgrades

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced stricter guidelines to tackle the growing misuse of FASTags, particularly focusing on cases where the tag is not affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen. Referred to as “loose FASTags” or “tag-in-hand,” such practices are now being classified as violations that may lead to blacklisting of the FASTag.

According to a directive issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, toll operators and concessionaires have been instructed to report any instance where a FASTag is not properly mounted. These cases are often seen as attempts to disrupt the automated toll collection process, which depends heavily on accurate and timely scanning of FASTags.

To facilitate prompt action, NHAI has established a dedicated email channel where toll staff can report violations. Once reported, such FASTags may be added to a blacklist or hotlist, effectively disabling their use.

This move comes as part of a broader modernization initiative aimed at streamlining toll collection across India’s highway network. Among the key upcoming features are a FASTag-based Annual Pass System and the implementation of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. Both systems demand seamless vehicle-tag integration to function efficiently.

Operationally, loose FASTags can cause significant disruptions. These include inaccurate toll charges, traffic congestion at toll plazas, and complications in closed-loop tolling environments. By tightening regulations, NHAI aims to reduce such inefficiencies and ensure smoother passage for all highway users.

Earlier in June, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a FASTag-based Annual Pass, expected to launch on Independence Day. Priced at Rs. 3000, the pass will offer 200 trips or a one-year validity, whichever is earlier and is intended to make highway travel more convenient.

As India’s road infrastructure moves toward more automated systems, proper usage of FASTags will become increasingly critical. NHAI’s recent directive signals a firm step toward ensuring compliance and preparing for future-ready tolling technologies
