Mercedes has smashed more than 25 long-distance records with its strikingly orange Concept AMG GT XX during an extraordinary ultramarathon run. At the Nardò high-speed test track, the electric prototype demonstrated both its speed and endurance, achieving the record.
Over nearly eight days, 17 racing drivers, including George Russell and Doriane Pin, piloted two Concept AMG GT XXs as a team. The drivers rotated in two-hour stints, maintaining speeds of up to 300 km/hr, and then pausing for rapid recharging. Despite the relentless schedule, the cars performed with remarkable consistency.
The standout record was a staggering 5479km covered within 24 hours, shattering the previous EV benchmark of under 4000km. The car’s 1340 HP output from three axial-flux motors was not the sole reason for this feat. Instead, the key advantage lay in its groundbreaking charging speeds, averaging an impressive 850 kW.
At that rate, around 402 km of range could be replenished in just five minutes of charging. While such chargers are rare outside controlled environments, the test highlighted the enormous potential of Mercedes’ new AMG.EA platform. During the challenge, the two cars finished just 25km apart, highlighting their consistency.
Perhaps most spectacularly, the AMG GT XX covered 40,075km in just over seven days, i.e. enough to circumnavigate the globe. Despite ambient temperatures soaring to 35°C, the cars also reached the 40,233 km or 25,000-mile milestone during the attempt. The challenge pushed both endurance and efficiency to the extreme.
Mercedes has a history of chasing records at Nardò, dating back to its orange C111 prototypes of the 1970s and 1980s. This latest achievement continues the legacy, showing how electric performance cars can now push boundaries once reserved for combustion-powered icons.
The Mercedes CTO, Markus Schäfer, commended the “motivation and dedication” of the cross-functional team, which included experts from AMG, Mercedes-Benz, and the brand’s F1 engine specialists. With its latest achievement, Mercedes has once again emphasised its determination to set the pace in the era of high-performance EVs.
