Maruti Baleno Top-Spec & Base-Spec Variants Tested By Bharat NCAP, Maiden Hatchback To Receive A Crash Test Rating

The Maruti Baleno has scored an impressive 4 stars in the Bharat NCAP crash test. Testing Child Occupant and Adult Occupant Safety ratings determined the score of the premium hatchback, with 3 and 4 stars, respectively. Testing included all four variants of the Baleno: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha.

Maruti equips the base-spec Sigma and Delta variants with two airbags, while the top-spec Zeta and Alpha trims come with 6 airbags. All variants of the hatchback will receive 6 airbags as standard starting next year.

Safety Features

Safety features in the Maruti Baleno include ABS, ESP with Hill Hold Assist, 360-degree camera, brake assist, and ISOFIX seat anchorages. The Baleno already meets AIS-100 pedestrian norms and ESC regulations.

Zeta & Alpha Variants Crash Test Results

The Baleno Zeta and Alpha variants received a good head and neck protection rating in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test. Notably, the chest, pelvis, tibia and feet received a marginal to adequate rating for the driver and front passenger.

Side Impact Deformable Barrier Test

In the Side Impact Deformable Barrier Test, the respective variants received good ratings for everything other than the chest, which received an adequate rating. The Baleno achieved a good safety rating in the Side Pole Impact Test as well.

The Child Occupant Protection was tested for 18-month and 3-year-old passengers. The front scored 7.17 points and 1.63 points out of 9 total points, respectively. In terms of side protection, it scored 4 out of 4 for both ages.

The Baleno’s top variants got a Dynamic Score of 16.81 points out of 24 points. They scored a perfect score of 12 points out of 12 points in CRS installation. However, the Vehicle Assessment Score was a lower 6 points out of 13 points.

In terms of scores of Adult Occupant Protection, they receive 26.52 points out of 32 total points. The scores for Child Occupant Protection stands at 34.81 points out of 49 points. The Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test and Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test scores are 11.54 and 14.99 points out of the total 16 points, respectively.

Sigma & Delta Variants Crash Test Results

The base-spec Sigma and Delta variants of the hatchback receive similar results to the top-spec variants. The Side Impact Pole Test and Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test are the same for both the top-spec and base-spec variants.

In terms of the Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test, the Sigma and Delta received an adequate rating for the head and neck protection. However, the chest receives a marginal safety rating for the chest. This difference can be because of the side curtain airbags, missing on the Sigma and Delta variants.

In terms of scores of Adult Occupant Protection, they receive 24.04 points out of 32 total points. The scores for Child Occupant Protection are the same, 34.81 points out of 49 points. The Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test and Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test scores are 11.54 and 12.50 points out of the total 16 points, respectively.

In terms of Child Occupant Protection, the Baleno’s base-spec variants’ scores are identical to the top-spec variants.

Outlook

The Indian crash test agency tested the Maruti Baleno as the maiden hatchback. In Latin NCAP testing, the previous generation Baleno received a 0-star rating. However, the crash testing norms for the Latin NCAP are different from the Bharat NCAP.
