Kia has launched the Carens Clavis EV. The brand bases the Carens Clavis EV on the previously revealed Carens Clavis’ ICE version, marking it as the brand’s first mass-produced EV in the country. Kia prices the Carens Clavis EV at Rs. 17.99 Lakh (ex-showroom) and will commence bookings from July 22.
In the front, the bumper is redesigned with active aero flaps to boost aerodynamic efficiency and overall driving range. The charging port is now placed on the nose, similar to the Creta Electric. An illuminated LED DRL band replaces the earlier non-functional contrasting trim, enhancing the futuristic look.
New ice-cubed LED fog lamps and silver trim on the lower bumper add a touch of modern styling. A 25-litre frunk has been introduced for additional cargo space, unique to the EV version. The profile remains mostly unchanged except for new aero-optimised 17-inch alloy wheels.
At the rear, visual updates are minimal, with an EV badge being the only notable change from the ICE-powered Carens Clavis. Ground clearance remains strong at 200mm, making it practical for Indian road conditions. The overall silhouette and tailgate design remain untouched in the Carens Clavis EV.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV is related to the Hyundai Creta Electric and has the same powertrain setup. It is available with two battery options, i.e. 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh, giving ARAI-certified range of 404 Km and 490 Km respectively.
The smaller battery pack has a motor producing 135 HP, and the larger battery pack has a motor producing 171 HP. Both motors produce the same 255 NM of torque. These figures are the same as the Creta Electric.
The Carens Clavis EV can complete a 0-100 Km/hr sprint in 8.4 seconds, thanks to its 51.4 kWh battery pack. The Carens Clavis EV also offers four levels of battery regeneration. This is controllable using the steering-mounted paddle shifters and a gear selector mounted on the steering column.
In terms of charging, the brand provides two AC charger options, i.e. 7.4 kW and 11 kW. The 11 kW AC charger replenishes the 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery packs from 10% to 100% in 4 hours and 4 hours and 45 minutes, respectively. Kia is also offering an 8-year or 160,000 Km warranty on the MPV.
Inside, the dashboard design is identical to the ICE version but with subtle enhancements and more refined material choices. The centre console adopts a floating design, increasing usable cabin storage space. Slightly different trim patterns help distinguish the EV from its ICE version.
The Carens Clavis EV comes packed with features like twin 12.3-inch screens and wireless smartphone integration. It also includes a switchable HVAC/media panel, Bose audio system, and panoramic sunroof. Other highlights include ventilated seats, a powered driver’s seat, and connected car features.
Comfort features like one-touch electric tumble for the second row and the Boss Mode enhance rear passenger convenience. Kia also includes wireless phone charging and V2L and V2V charging support. These premium features ensure the EV feels both futuristic and family-friendly.
In terms of safety, the Clavis EV includes six airbags, ESC, ABS, hill-start assist, and TPMS as standard. There are disc brakes on all four wheels, enhancing the stopping power. Higher trims offer Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera for better driver confidence.
A pedestrian-friendly virtual engine sound system has been added to increase safety in city driving scenarios. Kia currently offers this EV only in a 7-seater configuration. This makes it ideal for large families needing space with sustainability.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV is priced between Rs. 17.99 Lakh (ex-showroom) for the HTK+ variant and Rs. 24.49 Lakh (ex-showroom) for the HTX+ Long Range variant. This helps the Carens Clavis EV undercut competitors like the BYD eMax 7. The Carens Clavis EV provides more space compared to the Hyundai Creta Electric, thanks to its MPV form factor.
