Gordon Murray has built the S1 LM to commemorate 30 years since the McLaren F1 GTR Le Mans triumph. GMSV built the new S1 LM as a road-legal homage to the GMA T.50 and T.50s foundation. GMSV created it for one very special customer.
The McLaren F1 wasn’t intended for racing, but insistent customers persuaded Murray and Ron Dennis otherwise. Murray and Ron Dennis transformed the F1 with minimal tweaks into a Le Mans conqueror. In 1995, the F1 GTR shocked the motorsport world, finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
McLaren later celebrated that success by producing five F1 LM road cars, which featured uprated V12 engines and distinctive high-downforce kits. Several F1 road cars also got similar upgrades, including unrestricted race engines. Murray’s latest project, the S1 LM, drew inspiration from these creations for its mood board.
The S1 LM, or Special Vehicle 1, Le Mans, will be limited to only five cars. All examples are destined for a single customer obsessed with the F1 GTR. Together with GMA, he envisioned a modern, road-usable tribute.
In terms of design, it blends F1 GTR nostalgia with modern flair. Slim headlights recall the original, while vents, roof scoop, and five-spoke wheels echo classic cues. The rear dominates attention with a dual-plane wing, quad Inconel exhausts, and neon-slat taillights.
Its underpinnings combine the T.50’s three-seat layout and six-speed manual with lightweight materials borrowed from the T.50s. At its heart lies a reworked 4.3-litre Cosworth V12 producing over 700 HP. Revving past 12,000 RPM, it promises an astonishing soundtrack and thrilling performance.
Notably, the legendary designer assures that the S1 LM is a road car and not a one-off track special.
Inside, Murray emphasises lightness, engineering purity, and playful touches. Renderings reveal tartan seats, a wooden gear shifter, and even ear defenders. It’s a functional yet artistic cockpit in line with Murray’s philosophy.
Pricing remains undisclosed, though predictably astronomical. Deliveries of the first S1 LM are scheduled for next year. Meanwhile, GMSV hints at more bespoke projects ahead.
