Euro NCAP’s 2026 rules require physical controls, posing challenges for modern carmakers

Starting in 2026, Euro NCAP will tighten its vehicle safety rating protocols, introducing stricter requirements that could make it harder for carmakers to achieve the coveted 5-star rating. Among the new rules, the most debated is the requirement for physical controls for key vehicle functions – a move that’s sparking concern across the automotive industry.

Emphasis on Safety Over Design Minimalism

The updated Euro NCAP assessment emphasises reducing driver distraction and improving real-world safety. To earn top marks, vehicles must include physical buttons, knobs or stalks for essential functions such as turn signals, hazard lights, windshield wipers, the horn and emergency SOS systems. The organisation argues that such controls must remain clearly visible and easily reachable to help drivers keep their focus on the road.

This change stems from research showing that drivers who divert their attention from the road, even for two seconds, face a significantly higher risk of collision. Studies also indicate that touchscreen-based interfaces can distract drivers for anywhere between 5 and 40 seconds per task, especially when they lack tactile feedback. According to recent EU data, distraction-related crashes have risen by around 20% since 2020.

Challenges for Carmakers

The upcoming rules pose a challenge for manufacturers that have adopted minimalist interiors, emphasizing touch-based interfaces. To comply, many will have to redesign dashboards and introduce new hardware, potentially leading to higher production costs and delays in upcoming models.

Additionally, Euro NCAP is updating other test areas. Driver drowsiness detection systems will now carry 25 points instead of just two, requiring continuous monitoring of eye and head movements and even detection of possible drug or alcohol impairment. Child safety will also receive more weight, with rear seats required to alert occupants if seat belts are not fastened. Airbags, meanwhile, will need to adapt inflation levels based on passenger size and position.

While the automotive industry broadly supports Euro NCAP’s focus on safety, manufacturers are urging for flexibility in implementation to balance innovation, design and driver engagement.
