Automakers Reconsider Support For Apple’s CarPlay Ultra Amid Control Concerns

Some automakers rethink integrating CarPlay Ultra, balancing control and consumer demand

Apple’s ambitious plan to expand its CarPlay platform, known as CarPlay Ultra, is facing unexpected pushback from several major automakers. The advanced version of CarPlay, designed to integrate with and control all digital displays within a vehicle, was announced three years ago with promises of transforming the in-car user experience. However, its rollout has been significantly delayed, with no vehicles featuring the system until now.

Aston Martin recently became the first automaker to officially confirm its adoption of CarPlay Ultra. Yet other prominent car manufacturers that Apple initially listed as partners are now reconsidering or withdrawing support altogether. Brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Polestar and Volvo are reportedly stepping back from their initial plans to integrate the technology.

Renault has also expressed reluctance, reportedly cautioning Apple against overreaching into proprietary vehicle systems. Other companies like Ford and Nissan, mentioned during the initial announcement, have declined to comment or share concrete plans regarding CarPlay Ultra.

The hesitation stems largely from automakers’ desire to maintain control over in-car interfaces, which have become critical platforms for brand identity, user engagement and potential revenue through software and subscription services. Some manufacturers view full integration with Apple’s system as ceding too much authority over these spaces. General Motors, for instance, made headlines by opting to completely phase out support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its upcoming vehicles, in favour of its own software solutions.

Despite these reservations, not all automakers are turning away from Apple’s upgraded platform. Porsche remains committed to offering CarPlay Ultra in future models. Additionally, Kia, Hyundai and Genesis have confirmed their intentions to integrate the system, even though they were not among the brands originally highlighted by Apple.

Ultimately, market demand may influence the final outcome. Car buyers have shown strong preferences for smartphone integration in their vehicles and CarPlay has already established itself as a dominant player in the infotainment space. Should CarPlay Ultra prove popular with consumers, automakers may face pressure to reconsider their stance.
