Stellantis Takes Full Ownership of Its India Operations

Stellantis has taken full ownership of its India operations after acquiring the remaining stake held by Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd. (HMFCL), a CK Birla Group company, in Stellantis Automobiles India Private Limited (SAIPL).

With this acquisition, Stellantis now owns 100% of SAIPL and its manufacturing facility in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. The company says the move reflects its confidence in India’s long-term growth potential and will allow it to take faster decisions and have greater control over its operations in the country.

Stellantis and the CK Birla Group began their partnership in India in 2017. Since then, the collaboration has helped build the foundation for Stellantis’ manufacturing and mobility operations in the country.

The Thiruvallur plant started vehicle production in 2021 and currently manufactures the Citroën C3, ë-C3, C3 Aircross and Basalt. The facility has more than 95% localisation, which means a large majority of the components used are sourced locally. Stellantis has invested more than €1 billion in India so far across manufacturing, product development, localisation and other areas.

The company is now planning a major increase in production at Thiruvallur. Annual production is expected to rise from around 16,000 units in 2026 to more than 43,000 units by 2028, marking a growth of over 160%.

This expansion is also expected to create more jobs. Stellantis plans to more than double its direct workforce at the facility from 610 employees in 2026, while also generating additional employment through its suppliers and logistics partners.

The Thiruvallur plant is also becoming an important export hub for Stellantis, with vehicles being shipped to eight markets across four continents. With full ownership of its India operations, Stellantis is now looking to further expand its manufacturing and business presence in the country, with Thiruvallur playing an important role in its plans.
