2027 Tata Nexon Spied Testing With Significant Design Changes

Tata Motors appears to have started testing the next generation Nexon in India, with a heavily camouflaged prototype recently spotted on public roads. Expected to arrive in 2027, the new model is reportedly being developed under the internal codename Garud and appears to feature more substantial changes than a conventional facelift.

The Nexon first went on sale in India in 2017 and subsequently received major updates in 2020 and 2023. The arrival of a second-generation model in 2027 would therefore mark roughly a decade since the original compact SUV was introduced.

Next-Generation Tata Nexon Gets A Revised Profile

Despite the camouflage, the test vehicle appears to retain the basic proportions that have become synonymous with the Nexon. However, several areas of the body indicate that Tata is making notable changes to the SUV’s overall structure and styling.

The C-pillar is one of the most obvious differences. It appears taller and more upright compared with the outgoing Nexon, while the rear doors also seem to have been redesigned. The current model features a relatively steeply sloping roof towards the rear, giving it a crossover-like, almost coupe-inspired silhouette.

The revised roof and C-pillar arrangement could result in a roomier rear section, particularly in terms of headroom. It also gives the prototype a more conventional SUV profile compared with the current Nexon.

The A-pillar appears to have been revised as well, with a sharper transition towards the roof. While these changes point towards a substantial redesign, they do not necessarily mean Tata is moving to an entirely new platform.

Reports have previously suggested that the next-generation Nexon could continue using a significantly modified version of Tata’s existing X1 architecture.

Rear Design Still Under Development

Changes are also visible at the back of the prototype. The rear windscreen appears flatter than the glass on the current Nexon, while the tailgate and bumper are expected to receive new designs.

The test vehicle features what appears to be a larger roof spoiler, along with revised rear bodywork and more prominent wheel-arch treatment. However, much of the production design remains hidden beneath camouflage.

Interestingly, the prototype is equipped with temporary tail lamps that resemble those on the current Nexon. The use of existing alloy wheels and other provisional components suggests that this is still an early development vehicle. Future test mules are likely to provide a clearer indication of the final production design.

Petrol, CNG And Flex-Fuel Options Expected

Tata is expected to continue offering the Nexon with multiple powertrain choices. Petrol and CNG versions are likely to remain part of the range, while a flex-fuel option could also be introduced depending on Tata’s strategy for the next-generation model.

The future of the 1.5-litre diesel engine is less certain. With increasingly stringent emission requirements, further development of the diesel powertrain could add to the vehicle’s cost and complexity. As a result, Tata could eventually discontinue diesel from the Nexon range.

A new-generation Nexon EV is also expected. However, Tata may not launch the electric and internal-combustion versions simultaneously, leaving open the possibility of separate launch timelines.

New Cabin And Technology Expected

The interior has not yet been revealed, although a complete redesign is expected. The next-generation Nexon could receive updated digital displays, a newer infotainment system, expanded connected-car functionality and additional safety technology.

Tata is also likely to focus on improving cabin space and overall refinement as part of the model’s generational update. More details should emerge as development progresses and less heavily camouflaged prototypes begin testing.

2027 Tata Nexon Rivals

The Nexon is expected to remain in India’s highly competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment. Upon launch, it will continue to compete with models such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.

The segment is also expected to see additional competition by the time the new Nexon arrives, with several upcoming compact SUVs potentially entering the market.

For now, Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the launch timeline, specifications or powertrain details of the next-generation Nexon. With testing apparently underway, more information is expected to emerge closer to its anticipated 2027 debut.
