The Delhi government plans to announce its new electric vehicle (EV) policy before February 2026. At an International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) event, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh confirmed the timeframe. He stated that the government is consulting the public and planning carefully to ensure the policy is widely acceptable.
The upcoming policy aims to strengthen incentives, introduce tax relief for EV owners, and expand scrapping programmes. The charging infrastructure will see a boost with plans to install 3500 new charging points this year. This figure will increase to 13,000 by 2030.
Notably, charging stations under flyovers and in housing societies will be crucial to making EV adoption more practical for residents.
Draft proposals include phasing out CNG auto-rickshaws by August 2025 and banning the registration of new petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers after August 15, 2026. The plan envisions an increase in electric buses and all-electric last-mile transport services. These measures may play a major role in reducing Delhi’s severe air pollution levels, as the city continues to struggle with poor Air Quality Index (AQI) readings.
Delhi’s original EV policy was launched in 2020, aiming for 25% of new vehicle registrations to be electric by 2024. Although the policy initially had an expiration date of August 2023, authorities have extended it several times, most recently in July this year. The upcoming version shall build on previous progress and accelerate EV adoption in the capital.
