Tata.ev recently announced the launch of their new mega chargers on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Delhi-Jaipur stretches which I think is a very important development allowing EV owners to plan longer road trips with ease now. I decided to drive down on one of these routes and thus we began! Sanand which is a little ahead of Ahmedabad is where Tata’s new EVs are manufactured and it made for a fitting start to our road trip.

I started from Tata’s EV manufacturing facility in Sanand by 7 AM with a full SoC on our Curvv EV test car and the range was a little over 400 kms. The distance from Sanand to Mumbai is more than 600 kms and I planned to take 2 short halts that would double up as rest + charging stops. The route was Sanand – Ahmedabad – Vadodara – Vapi – Mumbai.

From Sanand to Ahmedabad there was a lot of early morning traffic because it was a Monday. It took me more than an hour to get to the start of the NE1 Ahmedabad – Vadodara Expressway. From there, the journey was smooth flowing. The expressway had very moderate traffic and I could push the Curvv a little because the speed limits are 100 km/hr. It was extremely hot though and the AC was doing a fab job of keeping the cabin cool while the front ventilated seats also helped matters.

I reached Vadodara and finished a few chores that I had and it turned out to be a detour of almost 40 kms. The SoC was still upwards of 50% and the car had more than enough juice to keep going. My next stop was at Karjan, which is where Tata.ev and ChargeZone have opened their new mega chargers. It’s a strategic location since it is placed right on the highway and is just 45 mins ahead of Vadodara towards Mumbai.

This facility has been nicely made and there are properly marked, big parking slots for all the EVs. Of course, there will be some preferential treatment for Tata.ev owners such as a 25% discount using the ChargeZone app. The mega charger has a maximum DC charging capacity of 400 kW while the Curvv has a max capacity of 70 kW. The SoC on our car when we reached here was 37% and the range was 132 kms after driving it for 206 kms.

It took barely 35 mins to get the battery to 95% SoC and the cost was Rs. 796/- incl GST. If I owned this Curvv, my cost would have gone down by 25%. I set off towards Vapi for the next charging halt. It was a 3.5 hour drive to Vapi and I got a chance to gun the Curvv on the highway and quickly cover some distance. The Harman Kardon audio system was keeping me entertained. I was mostly driving the car in City mode and engaged Eco and Sport modes for short durations.

I reached Vapi at 7:15 PM and the SoC was now 24% with a range of 103 kms. It took an hour to get the car charged at the new charging station at Shanti Complex. It was past 8 PM by the time I left and the highway had pretty poor visibility due to no street lights. The LED headlamps came in to be very useful here and I even used some of the ADAS features which were actually useful in certain scenarios. It took around 3 hours to reach Mumbai which is 150 kms from Vapi. There’s a new charging station at Hotel Express Inn, Ghodbunder Road as well but I didn’t use it as our car had a range of more than 200 kms left.

Overall, it was a great drive in the Curvv. Traffic at certain sections of the highway increased my travel time but otherwise it was very comfy. The vehicle has enough grunt for long drives and is quite comfortable. The new chargers are very conveniently located on the highway and they are going to increase the network even further across various parts of the country, While all the chargers on this route are in collaboration with ChargeZone, Tata has also partnered with Statiq on other routes.
