The Toyota Innova HyCross has achieved a significant safety milestone by earning a 5-star rating in the latest round of crash tests conducted by the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP). This makes it the first Toyota model and the first MPV to have its safety ratings officially published by BNCAP.
The Innova HyCross performed notably well in both adult and child occupant protection assessments. In adult occupant protection, the HyCross secured 30.47 out of a possible 32 points, earning it a 5-star rating. Specifically, in the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the vehicle scored 14.47 out of 16 points. While most body regions, including the head and legs, received a ‘good’ safety rating, the driver’s chest and left tibia were rated as ‘adequate.’
The side movable deformable barrier test saw the Innova HyCross score the full 16 points, with ‘good’ protection ratings across all body parts. The MPV also underwent a side pole impact test, where it received an ‘OK’ rating.
For child occupant protection, the Innova HyCross received 45 out of 49 points, translating into another 5-star rating. The vehicle achieved maximum scores in both the dynamic test (24/24 points) and the Child Restraint System (CRS) installation evaluation (12/12 points). In the vehicle assessment section, it received 9 out of 13 points. The tests were conducted using dummies simulating 18-month-old and 3-year-old children.
BNCAP tested various variants of the HyCross, including the GX 8-seater petrol model and the hybrid VX 8-seater and ZX 7-seater versions. The safety ratings apply to all variants of the model lineup.
Standard safety equipment on the Toyota Innova HyCross includes six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control and hill start assist. Higher variants, such as the ZX (O), are also equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), further enhancing the vehicle’s safety credentials.
The strong crash test performance of the Innova HyCross reinforces Toyota’s focus on occupant safety, especially in the growing MPV segment in India.
